When I look around our city centre, I am proud of the remarkable revitalisation we have achieved over the past 10 years.
Council has invested in some major capital infrastructure projects, such as the Karratha Leisureplex and the Red Earth Arts Precinct, which have reshaped our central business district into a vibrant hub.
Our main street - Sharpe Avenue - has been extended, new roads established and all have been upgraded with new asphalt, footpaths, kerbs and underground services.
We created Karratha Terrace to allow better access and traffic flow across the City and did some major rezoning of land in our CBD to enable both small and larger businesses to establish there. The beautiful Pelago apartments show how investors will take the opportunity to support new developments if the land and infrastructure is available.
Our new CBD layout also meant the landmark Karratha Health Campus could be established in a central location, which provides staff and visitors with an easy walk to local shops and services and simultaneously supports local businesses.
We continue to enhance our streetscapes and develop more parks and connected open spaces, such as Welcome Park that will transform the vacant lot on the corner of Welcome Road and Sharpe Avenue in coming months.
All this redevelopment aligns with our Strategic Community Plan 2016-2026, which builds on our past planning works and guides the City’s actions to achieve our vision of becoming Australia’s most liveable regional city.
While Karratha’s impressive transformation from a mining town into northern WA’s regional centre is well on the way now, there is always more to be done.
