One of the real privileges of being Mayor of the City of Karratha is being given the opportunity to recognise some of the outstanding people that make up our community – and that’s exactly what I will be lucky enough to do this Australia Day.
Each year on January 26, we hold a special Australia Day Awards breakfast to celebrate local residents who have been nominated across our six award categories. We announce each of the very deserving winners alongside our generous category sponsors and thank them for their incredible and selfless dedication to our community.
In addition to these awards, Australia Day also sees us welcome new citizens to the City of Karratha, a proud day for our community and these new residents who have made the decision to become Australian. This year we will be welcoming more than 45 new citizens!
We see out Australia Day by coming together as a community, this year on Hampton Oval in Dampier, to celebrate the future of Australia and what it means to be able to live in such an incredible country. This free sundowner event will begin at 5pm and feature live music, water amusements, a bar area and DJ as well as a firework display from 8.15pm.
A big thank you to our generous sponsors who help us to ensure these Australia Day events are delivered year after year; Horizon Power, Rio Tinto, Woodside Energy and the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project (Australia Day Awards) and Rio Tinto, Nielsen Liquid Waste Services, Kennards Hire and Cleanaway (Australia Day Sundowner).
I hope this Australia Day each of you is able to reflect on how lucky we are to be a part of this wonderful community and call Australia home.
