On March 30th this year, Rio Tinto transferred 10 parcels of land and related infrastructure to the City of Karratha. This presented a great opportunity for us to build on the significant investment the City has already made in the Town over the past years in projects like the Dampier Foreshore Development, Dampier Community Hub, the Shark Cage Beach Redevelopment and the upgrades that are currently being undertaken at both the Public Boat Ramp and Windy Ridge Oval.

We have therefore engaged consultants to develop a Masterplan for Dampier, which is a conceptual planning document that will set out a vision for future developments in Dampier over the next 10-15 years.

The Masterplan aims to enhance the unique characteristics of our town-site, optimise its physical location on the waterfront and solidify Dampier as a world class destination. It will identify areas for future expansion and development at key areas such as the town centre, the ovals, the foreshore etc and will also take into account future economic opportunities for additional retail, food and beverage, accommodation and tourist offerings.

Vital for production of the Masterplan is communication with the Dampier community, so the City has been engaging in extensive one-on-one and group consultations with various individuals, companies, community associations and government organisations for over two months now. We have had four community workshop/consultation sessions and the level of engagement we have received during the planning process has been fantastic.

The next steps in the Master planning process are to consolidate plans and feedback from the community into options that will be presented to council in July.

Dampier is a beautiful spot and it is exciting to see the opportunities that exist and to consider what the future holds for our gateway to the Archipelago.
