DIVERSIFYING EMPLOYMENT – 14/06/2018

This week the Developing Northern Australia Conference was held in Alice Springs and was attended by a number of people from our City as we will be hosting the conference here in Karratha next year.

The theme for 2018 was “Progress, Growth and Investment” and I spoke on Diversifying for Jobs in Remote Australia – initiatives we have supported in Karratha as a case study for what may be achieved.

Ours is an impressive list of proposals which includes:

- The Sahara Forest Project, which we hope will result in the company’s high-tech greenhouses producing a range of vegetables and native plants for export from Karratha;

- The EcoMag development which uses Australian research to extract high-value magnesium compounds from salt bitterns;

- Yara’s renewable ammonia project whereby solar power will be used to split water to obtain key ammonia ingredient, hydrogen and so produce a clean sustainable export product;

- Woodside’s LNG bunkering and domestic sales initiative where the company intends to market LNG domestically, replacing polluting and expensive diesel with or own natural gas;

- The Pilbara Rock Oyster farming trials we are undertaking in the Dampier Archipelago;

- Contract Resources’ mercury extraction plant – the only one of its size and sophistication in Australia, currently being commissioned;

- The City’s proposed EcoHub where a large scale PV solar power station would be co-located with its customer’s plants and research facilities.

In addition, we have Rainstorm’s use of bitterns to extract magnesium chloride as an ingredient in its dust suppression products, Plankton Farms’ algae project, Yara’s ammonium nitrate plant and plans by Woodside to produce renewable hydrogen for direct export.

With the Gap Ridge Industrial Estate, the duplicated Dampier highway to our port, the upgrading of our power and water supplies, sewerage treatment and recycled water distribution lines, we are positioning our City for its next development phase.
