NEDC – Karratha 2023 - Website Welcome

It is my absolute pleasure to announce that the City of Karratha will be hosting the National Economic Development Conference in 2023 - we look forward to welcoming you to our city.

The City of Karratha is a dynamic local government area of global significance, home to some of the of the largest mineral resource projects in the world.

Karratha, and the Pilbara region of Western Australia, has been dubbed economic engine room of the nation, producing some 40% of Australia’s total exports worth over $100bn every year.

Rio Tinto, BHP, FMG and others produce more iron ore from the Pilbara than any other region or country in the world.

WA accounts for 12% of Global LNG exports and 59% of Australian LNG exports, much of which is produced right here by the likes of Woodside, the North West Shelf Project, Chevron and Santos.

While the City will continue to be the hub of resources projects for a long time to come, we are entering an exciting new phase of economic development and diversification to capitalize on new opportunities and build on our solid foundations.

Our aim is to leverage our extensive natural assets to attract new and sustainable industries to support economic growth for generations to come.

This is already underway with a diverse range of innovative projects happening or on the horizon in aquaculture, agriculture, renewable energy, logistics, processing and tourism.

In July the City launched the Pilbara Hydrogen Cluster, a collaborative approach aimed at establishing and growing a Hydrogen industry in the Pilbara to take advantage of this rapidly growing industry.

The Murujuga Oyster project is currently trialling the growing of native oysters commercially in the Dampier Archipelago.

And EcoMag, an Australian company, which has developed a process to extract magnesium compounds from seawater, will soon commence construction of its facility in Karratha. The magnesium product will be exported world-wide for use in the aeronautical industry, specialty glass production, paint filler, metal processing, fire retardants and cosmetics and is expected to generate many tens of millions of dollars of export income and employ dozens of local residential staff.

These are just a few examples that we would like to share with you when you visit us in 2022.

Of course, when you are here there will also be time to enjoy the iconic natural attractions that surround Karratha.

From our ancient rock art on the Burrup Peninsular – now protected in Murujuga National Park - to Millstream National Park, the 42 islands of the Dampier Archipelago and the historic settlements of Roebourne and Cossack – you won’t be lost for things to do! We have an action-packed agenda planned for you while you are here.

So, thank you again for this wonderful opportunity to host the National Economic Development Conference.

We look forward to having you in 2023!
