When considering the second Tranche of the City’s business and community support initiatives announced recently, Council were keen to do as much as possible to promote our local tourist industry.

The City’s COVID-19 survey had identified tourism providers as one of the hardest hit areas of our local economy, so Council decided to give them a targeted boost.

This involves the City funding a discount to residents on local tours booked through the Karratha Tourist and Visitor Centre between 1 July this year and 1 January 2021. Residents will receive 20% off local rock art tours, boat cruises, fishing charters, helicopter flights, bush tucker tours or tag-a-long tours.

In addition to this, the City has removed its 12.5% commission fee on local tours booked through the KTVC, providing a total discount on local tours of almost one third.

Feedback from residents has been very positive. Since launching this month, the Karratha Visitor and Tourist Centre has already processed 22 local tours offering discounts to local residents.

One of our other Tranche 2 initiatives is the Try Local app, a unique new tool for your phone which will provide $100 free to each household across all our towns, which can only be spent on local businesses. The app is almost complete now and over 90 local businesses have registered to be a part of this.

We have worked with the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who have been working on a Try Local voucher scheme for many months, and Rio Tinto, who funded construction of the app itself.

While there has been an ever changing level of uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, one thing we are certain of is that the City of Karratha will bounce back and continue to achieve our vision to become Australia’s Most Liveable Regional City, with a thriving business sector and well connected community.

I encourage everyone to support our local tourist industry by ticking off their local bucket list items and taking advantage of this generous discount.
