Karratha gets its first Sister City
Mayor Zhang Guiwei of the Lanshan District of Rizhao, China and Mayor Peter Long of the City of Karratha have officially signed a Sister City agreement focused on trade, education and the promotion of cultural links.
China trip forges stronger relationships for trade and education
A productive meeting with senior executives from Baosteel has capped off a highly successful delegation from the City of Karratha to China.
The meeting covered issues including the cost of doing business in the Pilbara, native title and environmental approvals for Baosteel’s investment.
Sister City Program
In 2013 Council agreed to establish a Sister Cities Advisory Group to facilitate the development of Sister City relationships in countries where the City of Karratha has relevant economic and cultural ties. The Advisory Group recommended that China be the priority for a Sister City relationship. Following a delegation in February 2014, Lanshan District, Rizhao was selected the preferred Sister City candidate from China.
Rizhao (Chinese: 日照) is a prefecture-level city in southeastern Shandong province, China. It is situated on the coastline along the Yellow Sea, and features a major seaport. It borders Qingdao to the northeast, Weifang to the north, Linyi to the west and southwest, and faces Korea and Japan across the Yellow Sea to the east.
Shandong Province is a coastal province of the People’s Republic of China, and is part of the East China region. Shandong has played a major role in Chinese History from the beginning of Chinese Civilization along the lower reaches of the Yellow River
